Cycling in winter is still a pleasure. Layers, gloves, lights, a warm battery and all-season tires: what you need to keep riding in Switzerland.
Cycling in winter: this time I'm giving it a go!

The bike is freedom. The landscape scrolling by, the wind on my face: I choose my line and savor those sensations.

Then autumn colors take over and the air cools. But why should I give up the pleasure of riding?

Summer's advantages still hold in winter. You just need to dress for it. Concretely?

As soon as you start moving, the body warms up quickly. Several layers of clothing let you match your temperature to the effort. On an electric bike the effort is lighter, so the risk of overheating disappears. Extremities stay sensitive, and gloves are a good idea. Winter shoes will do, even if you add a pair of socks before you get on. A scarf, or even a beanie under the helmet, will protect your nose and ears. In the end, it is no more of a hassle than dressing to catch the bus.

Your e-bike battery has less capacity when it is cold. Better to store it somewhere warm, especially overnight, and clip it on just before you leave.

Light is weaker than in summer. To be seen, favor light-colored clothes, switch on your lights and fit reflective elements on the bike. Specialist bike shops have a whole range of elegant clothing that keeps you visible in the dusk.

Roads are often dry in winter. They are then no more dangerous than in summer. Watch the temperature when it rains, to avoid black ice or snow. Torks bike tires use compounds suited to all four seasons. On request, studded tires can be fitted for higher-altitude regions.

While the sun is scarce, riding outdoors brings movement and the dose of natural light that helps you keep your spirits up and stay healthy.

So, do you really want to be stuck in traffic or packed into public transport?

I chose freedom, and I ride all year round.
