Change gears
Right-hand shifters, when to shift, and how gears differ from assist.
Gears and electric assist are not the same thing.
- Gears (1 to 8, right-hand shifters) change how hard it is to pedal, to match the terrain.
- Assist (0 to 5, left-hand +/−) only changes how much the motor helps. It does not replace shifting.
On the right handlebar:
- Thumb (upper lever): easier gear, for climbs
- Index finger (lower lever): harder gear, for flats or descents
Ease off the pedals as you shift. Change before a hill, not in the middle of a steep climb. If you are already pushing hard, stop pedalling for a moment, shift while the bike is still rolling, then start again.
